Programs

Church of the Three Crosses offers a variety of programs and opportunities for mission for folks to explore and express their faith.

Worship – at 11:00 am each Sunday morning (except 2nd weekend in June, Old Town Art Fair, worship is at 9:00 am). Communion is celebrated the first Sunday of each month. A sanctuary projection system provides opportunities to supplement worship with relevant and enriching images.

Music – an ad hoc choir meets approximately once a quarter and sings a wide variety of traditional and world music. An “everybody bring your high school band instrument” orchestra is gathered once a year.

Education – it is a natural, human response to want to understand and figure things out, especially about what and why we believe. Thus, adult and youth education is a vital part of our spiritual journey.

Sunday School – for children and youth meets the first, second, fourth and fifth Sunday mornings at 10:00 am (September through May). The Sunday School is designed to provide positive educational opportunities for the children and youth to learn about our faith traditions.

Adult Forum – meets each Sunday morning at 10:00 am (September through May) and provides adults with opportunities to study and learn together.

Youth Group – school-age youth meet after worship the third Sunday of each month (September through May). These events provide opportunities for our youth to experience fellowship and take in some of the sights and activities of Chicago, or work in a community service endeavor. A photo on the home page shows the Rev. John Hobbs with the youth group and adult chaperones at North Avenue Beach.

Book Group – meets approximately every six weeks to read and discuss a variety of books, including fiction and theology/spirituality.

Yoga – meets each Monday at 7:00 pm at the church and is open to the neighborhood. Facilitated by a yoga instructor, the cost for each participant is $15 for the evening. This is a non-religious event.

Fellowship – relaxing, having fun and enjoying the company of others are a valid part of being in a family of faith.

Sunday Hospitality – after every Sunday worship, the congregation gathers informally for refreshments and conversation.

Art Fair – each second weekend in June the congregation, in conjunction with the Old Town Art Fair, our annual fundraiser, provides grilled sandwiches, cold beverages and a shady place to sit to Art Fair patrons through our “Grill on the Green.” This is a great opportunity to meet other congregants, to have fun, and to raise extra funds for the church.

Social Events – opportunities for fun and fellowship are scheduled throughout the year such as game night, bowling, Octoberfest and Advent craftmaking.

Evenings in the Park – an opportunity for fellowship and musical enrichment. Usually scheduled on the third Saturday evening of June, July and August. Church folks and neighbors are invited to bring a picnic supper and enjoy a musical concert in the park amphitheater adjacent to the church building. This is a non-religious event.

Mission & Service – we strive to make a positive difference in the world amidst so many needs and challenges.

Deborah’s Place – each last Tuesday of the month (September through June) the church provides a meal to the residents of Deborah’s Place, about four blocks from the church building. Deborah’s Place is a supportive housing facility that provides a home to women who have been homeless.

Pride Parade – for the last several years a contingent of the congregation has marched in Chicago’s annual Pride Parade along with the other congregations of the Chicago Coalition of Welcoming Churches.

Our Building as Mission Space – throughout the week our building, with its flexible and multi-use space, is rented by a variety of neighborhood organizations including support groups, theater companies and Old Town’s Kindermusik. Occasionally, youth groups from other churches which are visiting Chicago stay overnight. For facility information, go the “contact us” section.

Night Ministry Outreach – on the second Thursday evening, we meet at the church at 7:30 pm to prepare for the night, making sandwiches and packing snack items we provide at the Night Ministry's Health Bus stop in the Pilsen community.

Interfaith Council for the Homeless (ICH) – Each third Sunday of the month, a small house is passed through the congregation as we take our offering supporting our partnership with ICH to house a family so that a family can move from the shelter system to permanent housing.
